Unlock Iran’ Prisoners Displayed at Tompkins Square Park

Tompkins Square Park is being used a canvas to open up a dialogue about human rights, particularly regarding Iranian prisoners. ‘Unlock Iran’ is a collaborative visual by Inside Out Project and the folks from Iran Human Rights Documentation Center (IHRDC). It pairs with the IHRDC’s fervent digital campaign that hopes to draw worldwide awareness through discussion about such atrocities, leading up to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, scheduled for March 2014.
The very things we celebrate people for (exercise of intellectual, political, religious and artistic freedom of expression and association) has jailed lawyers, artists, scientists and other prominent citizens in Iran… At least 800 prisoners of rights are currently jailed in Iran’s prisons for exercising their basic rights and freedoms. With new leadership in Iran, and renewed international engagement with the country, we are in an optimal position to take the existing groundswell and pivot it towards human rights issues.
The exhibit comprises of 13 images of Iranian individuals held captive for exercising basic human freedoms, and is located in the center of Tompkins Square Park. The two with red lines through their faces were actually executed. This activation, mobilizing through Thunderclap, officially launches on March 3. More info can be found at Unlock Iran.
