Hassan Salamat Sentenced to 4 Years in Prison

The 26th branch of the Revolutionary Court in Tehran sentenced Hassan Salamat, a
master's student at Tehran University, to 4 years in prison. Salamat was among the
large group of activists arrested after the presidential election.
HRA- The students' rights unit of HRA reports that he 26th branch of the
Revolutionary Court in Tehran sentenced Hassan Salamat, a master's of sociology
student at Tehran University, to 4 years in prison. Salamat was among the large
group of activists arrested after the presidential election . he was detained in ward
number 209 of Evin prison for two months but was later released on $200,000 bail.
During a hearing held last week, the prosecutor's representative agreed to the
objections made by the defense attorney, Mohammad Oliyai-fard in regards to the
indictment. Nervertheless, Judge Pour-Abbas found Salamat guilty of charges that
were on the indictment and sentenced him to 4 years in prison. Salamat's charges
included propagating aganist the regime and cospiracy to disrupt national security.
Hassan Sala mat was under the watch of security forces before the elections. and his
student activities during his bachelor's studies had increased concerns of security
forces against him. During the election-related crisis, he was arrested because he
was suspected of having contact with two other activists, Zia Nabavi and Majid Don.
Although Hessam Salamat was the top student in the PhD entrance exam of
Sociology in University of Tehran, he was banned from continuing his studies due to
interference by the Faculty of Sociology chair as well as security institutes outside

education rights of banned (starred) students.
During tenth presidential electoral campaign when Mahmoud Ahmadinejad denied
the existence of any banned (starred) students, this committee showed
considerable protest to this issue by compiling a list of students deprived from
continuing their studies and assembling in front of the Ministry of Higher Education.
This action caused arrests of a number of committee members, including Ziaeddin
Nabavi, Majid Don, Shiva Nazarahari and Hassan Salamat.
Mohammad Oliaei-Fard, his lawyer announced that he will definitely object to
court's verdict.
