HRANA - The sentence issued for 50 Baha'is from Shiraz has been modified to include a travel
ban.
The individuals, mostly young adults, were arrested in Shiraz on May 19, 2006, for tutoring
underprivileged children. They were subsequently sentenced to three years in prison, but their
sentences were suspended conditional upon their regular participation in Islamic events and
studies.
However, as their three year sentences drew to a close, the terms of their sentences were
modified to include a travel . According to the Prosecutor of Shiraz, if a defendant wants to exist
the country, he or she must post a bail amount of 50 Million Tomans (-US $50,000) prior to
his/her exit. The ban is valid for 6 months and may be renewed if deemed necessary.
